“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” Review: “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” is a powerful and unique thrill ride that serves as a fine example of what a great blockbuster is. When I first heard that director Destin Daniel Cretton was going to helm this movie, I felt greater excitement flow within me. I’ve seen his independent film, “Short Term 12” which I loved, and embraced the idea of seeing what a quiet but powerful voice, such as his, could bring to this project. …

I have the utmost respect for filmmakers who want to bring or do something different with mainstream movies and excel in so many ways. Enter the gifted and delightfully chaotic talent and vision of writer/director James Gunn and his sequel to 2016’s “Suicide Squad.” This movie breaks so far beyond what one usually comes to find from a comic-book movie, and it runs full-force and with great fury without hesitation. …

It’s worth noting that nostalgia, by itself, is never a bad thing. It can be wonderful to admire and reflect upon. We all treasure something from the past or certain franchises or moments from the past in different ways, and it’s no shock to anyone that much media from the past decade has been focused on tapping into items from the past, especially the 80’s, to bring people into seats or entertain them.

I think that it’s also worth mentioning that, while most people mainly know me as the Disney fanatic, I do have great admiration…

“Black Widow” is the type of movie that makes me so happy and relieved that new, theatrical movies are happening again. I can’t say that it’s a Top Tier MCU film in the same ballpark as, say, “Civil War” or “The Winter Soldier.” With some more refining in certain narrative parts, I argue that it could’ve taken another step further to be the MCU’s “Wonder Woman” movie. Also, similar to others, I am a bit shocked that it took as long as it did to release a movie centering around this character now after such a…

For the first 15 or 30 minutes of “In the Heights,” my eyes felt misty. I couldn’t fully explain why at that moment. Maybe, it was because of the strong sense of optimism and community that made itself well-known from that first song that was played. Perhaps, my reaction came from seeing how tightly knit this greater family was with each other and how it reminded me of the family in my own life, biological and from some of my closest friends, and that sense of connection that can not be expressed through words but felt…

I admire a good horror film that continues to work with a clever premise and add different elements that give a little bit more to each entry. In the case of “Quiet Place II” it fits the bill quite nicely by providing more moments in which people are trying to find safety and survive an onslaught of deaf creatures that attack, based on hearing their own victims. …

At the time that this review is being written, I’ve noticed a few nice, positive surprises or changes, as of late, with what surrounds me. Positive surprises, in particular, can leave one with feeling more energy and joy than one might have predicted. In this particular case, I experienced a surprise that I honestly wasn’t certain if I would feel, and that came in the form of a live-action Disney movie based on a classic animated film that I legitimately enjoyed and even had a blast in through the majority of the time. Anyone…

In retrospect, “Tom and Jerry” honestly could’ve been a decent or entertaining film, and I tried my hardest to find the joy from this movie. Setting the first film in a long time with this duo is something that I honestly am surprised didn’t happen earlier, since they entertained others for so many years.

While I found a greater fascination to the Looney Tunes characters as a kid, I did enjoy the “Tom and Jerry” shorts quite well and know family that love them. Also, when I was younger, I actually did love the “Tom and…

Love is an extremely complicated experience. Relationships, in particular, are complicated as well in the sense that, as much as we want to make things go completely right with them, there will always be something different about another person that just catches us off-guard and has us fall head over heels for that other person and transforms us. That can be for better or worse. Sometimes, when a relationship heads too far south, it can be hard to know what to make of where you and the other person need to go after that, especially if…

A Movie Review by Victor DeBonis

“The Little Things” is a 2021 detective movie that has a few neat ideas and wants to stand out from other entries of its genre with a feel and style of its own, which is admirable, but it ends up not being anything particularly different or as deep as it is trying to be. This is a shame because it possesses sincere talent with its main actors and its director, John Lee Hancock, who has made good movies in the past, such as “The Founder” and “Saving Mr. Banks.” …
